We went to the .50 cal range on Tuesday, we shot both day and night, for the night it was pitch black but we used a thermal scope to engage targets, it was pretty cool. The M2 .50 caliber machine gun shoots a 1/2" wide bullet (hence .50 caliber, one caliber would equal one inch). The gun was introduce in 1933 and is still the weapon of choice for long distance defense and offense, it has been used widely in every war and is still mounted on the most modern aircraft from AH-64 Apache Helicopters to F-18 Fighter jets. Anyway, here's a short video of the weapon being fired at night, the bright spots are tracer rounds going down range.
